EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On July 7, 2026, the City Council approved a License Agreement with Nike, Inc. (Nike) for the Nike After Dark Tour Half Marathon to be held on October 24, 2026.  The event will utilize Seaside Lagoon and the adjacent parking lot as its headquarters and include a race course through portions of Redondo Beach and neighboring communities.

This item provides an opportunity for Nike to present the final event details to the City Council, including event operations, traffic management, public safety coordination, community outreach, and measures to mitigate impacts to affected residents, businesses, and waterfront visitors.  The presentation will also provide an opportunity for the Council to ask questions regarding event preparations and Nike's coordination with the community ahead of race day.

BACKGROUND

Nike selected Redondo Beach as the host location for the Los Angeles stop of its Nike After Dark Tour, a nighttime running series celebrating women's participation in sport.  The half marathon is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2026, and is expected to attract approximately 12,000 participants.  The race will begin and end at the King Harbor Waterfront, with a course extending through portions of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Torrance.

On July 7, 2026, the City Council approved a License Agreement with Nike authorizing use of Seaside Lagoon, designated parking facilities, portions of Harbor Drive, and other identified public areas for event activities.  Under the Agreement, Nike will pay a $320,000 license fee and reimburse the City for all municipal service costs associated with the event.  Nike is also required to provide a youth soccer clinic for up to 100 participants and 100 complimentary race entries for distribution by the City.

Seaside Lagoon will serve as the event headquarters, hosting participant services, sponsor and community activations, food and beverage concessions, entertainment, and other race-related activities.  Event setup, operations, and breakdown will occur over multiple days and require temporary street closures, parking restrictions, and designated event areas to accommodate race operations and ensure public safety.

The scale and timing of the event require coordination among City Departments, neighboring jurisdictions, and affected community stakeholders.  Under the Agreement, Nike is required to implement a community outreach program in coordination with the City, including advance notifications, stakeholder engagement, access planning, traffic updates, and ongoing communication with affected residents, businesses, hotels, places of worship, and other stakeholders.

Staff has been coordinating with Nike and its event management team, the Police Department, Fire Department, Public Works Department, and other involved City personnel regarding traffic control, emergency access, event security, pedestrian circulation, parking, business access, and event logistics.  Nike is responsible for mitigating community and business impacts, conducting all community outreach, obtaining required permits, providing event staffing and infrastructure, maintaining required insurance, reimbursing municipal service costs, and restoring affected event areas to their pre-event condition.

As noted, this item provides the City Council and members of the public an opportunity to hear directly from Nike regarding final event preparations, community outreach efforts, traffic and access management, public safety coordination, and the measures planned to mitigate impacts to the surrounding community.

COORDINATION

Planning for the race has been coordinated with Nike and its event management team, the Police Department, Fire Department, Public Works Department, and other involved City Departments regarding event planning and operational requirements.  This report was prepared by the Community Services Department.

FISCAL IMPACT

The License Agreement includes a $320,000 license fee to be paid to the City and requires Nike to reimburse the City for all municipal services costs associated with the event.
