EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Marine Mammal Care Center (MMCC) is a non-profit hospital for marine animals that are stranded along the Southern California coastline due to illness, injury, or malnutrition.  MMCC has provided life-saving care for marine animals in need since 2002, with the goal of rehabilitating and releasing them back to their ocean home.  The organization is the only year-round marine animal hospital in Los Angeles County.  MMCC admits an average of over 350 patients per year and regularly visits Redondo Beach to assist with local seal injuries in the Harbor and along the beach.  MMCC is currently seeking additional Federal funding to help ensure they have the resources needed to continue their important work.  MMCC has requested the City of Redondo Beach submit letters to area House and Senate representatives supporting their federal funding request.

This agenda item provides the City Council an opportunity to approve letters of support to the United States Senate and House of Representatives for MMCC’s Community Program Grant Funding request.  If supported, staff will send the letters to the Honorable Ted Lieu, of the U.S. House of Representatives, Honorable Nanette Barragan, of the U.S. House of Representatives, Honorable Laphonza Butler, of the U.S. Senate, and Honorable Alex Padilla, of the U.S. Senate.

FISCAL IMPACT

MMCC requires funding from a number of entities to successfully operate.  The requested Federal grant monies would supplement MMCC’s budget and reduce the need for other State and local contributions.
