EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The proposed ordinance was approved for introduction on June 4, 2024 and is now ready for second reading and adoption. The ordinance, if adopted, will amend the Redondo Beach Municipal Code (RBMC) to allow for cancellations of upcoming commission meetings due to a lack of business.
BACKGROUND
Currently, the RBMC dictates that all City commissions must meet on a monthly basis, and there is no means for commissioners to cancel an upcoming meeting. This has caused to scheduling uncertainty for participating members when there is a lack or quorum, and has led to many meetings being held when there is little to no substantive business to discuss.
The Ordinance presented for second reading and adoption would amend Title 2, Chapter 9, Article 1, Section 2-9.101 of the RBMC allowing for a commissions next monthly meeting to be cancelled, “for lack of business only by a majority vote of commissioners or members, and only during the regular meeting that immediately precedes the meeting to be canceled.” The Chair or Secretary of the commission would then have to announce the cancellation as well as provide the reasons for the cancellation.
Adoption of this Ordinance would establish the meeting cancellation process, giving commissioners the ability to cancel upcoming meetings in an effort to improve the substance and impact of commission meetings that are held.

This item was coordinated with various City Departments, and the City Attorney’s Office prepared the Ordinance.
