ADOPT BY TITLE ONLY RESOLUTION NO. CC-2410-088, A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA ADOPTING THE SALARY RANGE FOR THE POSITION OF PRINCIPAL TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER
end
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
On September 3, 2024, the City Council adopted Resolution No. CC-2409-074 to include a class specification for a Principal Transportation Engineer in the City’s Official Book of Class Specifications. As a follow up to that action, and to satisfy the requirements of California Code of Regulations Title 2, Section 570.3, the salary also needs to be approved and adopted by the City Council. As such, staff recommends the salary range of $9,170 - $11,912 per month be adopted for the classification specification for the position of Principal Transportation Engineer. This is based on, and equal to, the approved range for the Principal Civil Engineer position, which is supported by the Professional and Supervisory Association, and was included as part of the Budget Decision Package that provided funding for the position reclassification.
BACKGROUND
The City maintains an Official Book of Class Specifications for positions in the service of the City. Pursuant to Article 5, Chapter 3, Title 2 of the Redondo Beach Municipal Code, class titles, job duties, and salary ranges are periodically reviewed and updated. As part of the Fiscal Year 2023-2024 Budget, the City Council approved Decision Package #72 for the reclassification of the Transportation Engineer position to a Principal Transportation Engineer position along with an ongoing General Fund appropriation of $19,823. The appropriation allows for the proposed salary range of $9,170 - $11,912 per month for the reclassified position.
In September the City Council adopted Resolution No. CC-2409-074 to include a new class specification for a Principal Transportation Engineer in the City’s Official Book of Class Specifications. The salary range was not included as part of the Resolution and is now recommended for adoption.
The duties of the new position were discussed with the Professional and Supervisory Association and were agreed to be equal to the level of duties performed by the Principal Civil Engineer. As such, the proposed salary range is commensurate.
COORDINATION
The classification specification and salary range for the Principal Transportation Engineer was coordinated between the Public Works, Human Resources Departments and the Professional and Supervisory Association.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funding for the proposed salary range for the Principal Traffic Engineer position was approved via a Decision Package and is included in the Public Work’s Department’s annual operating budget.
