BACKGROUND
The City’s Consultant for implementation of the Artesia Blvd. Strategic Art Plan, LeBasse Projects (LBP), conducted a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to obtain a pool of artists potentially suitable for a variety of different public art projects associated with the ARTesia Public Art Master Plan. LBP reported that 192 submissions were received. LBP subsequently reviewed all responses and reduced the list and identified the most qualified submissions recommended for additional consideration. Simultaneously, the City selected participants for the Community Panel, consisting of two Cultural Arts Commissioners (Commissioners Christian-Kelly and Melendez), two residents (Georgette Gantner, District 1 and Sylvia Hathaway Chavez, District 4), and a representative of Redondo Beach Public Works Department (Urban Forestry Manager Mark Garlock), to review the top RFQ responses for the purpose of identifying finalists in each genre category (sculpture, art tile, “discovery” art pieces, etc.) and to make recommendations to the Cultural Arts Commission (Commission) regarding which artists should be invited to participate in a subsequent Request for Proposal (RFP).
The Community Panel will be convening soon to review and make a recommendation for the Commission’s consideration. In an effort to continue the momentum of this project, and in anticipation of this discussion needing the full attention of the Commission, staff requests the Commission consider scheduling a special meeting for this future topic. The following dates are available for consideration:
• Wednesday, July 29
• Thursday, July 30
• Friday, July 31
• Wednesday, August 5
If the Commission chooses not to schedule a special meeting, consideration of the Community Panel’s recommendation would take place at the Commission’s regular meeting on August 26, 2026.
