BACKGROUND

The Marketing Committee, comprised of Commissioners Stumphauzer, Hardy and Fernandez.

Committees may provide an update of projects through verbal or written reports. Written reports or supplemental information are attached to this report, or included in the agenda as a Blue Folder Item if received following the publication of the agenda packet.

THE CITY’S 132ND BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Staff and Commissioners have been working hard to produce two unique events for the City’s 132nd Birthday Celebration.

Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center - Art Gallery

1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd.

Friday, April 26 - 6 pm - 9 pm

Saturday, April 27 - Noon - 5 pm

Sunday, April 28 - 11 am - 4 pm

Not many people know that the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center (RBPAC) has a professional-quality art exhibition space with a track hanging system, track lighting, direct access to an outdoor patio with a full-service concession area and an entrance directly from the parking lot. As you face the building, the entrance is just to the right of the Gordon Huether sculpture. Stevan Colin, a former city council member and current chair of the Historical Commission has a collection of original watercolors by Caesar Hernandez (1909-1996), a very famous Redondo Beach artist and art teacher at Redondo Union High School. Over the past several years, Steve has taken his collection to the Historical Musuem for a June exhibition, but since Springfest is happening the same weekend as the City’s birthday this year, having that built-in audience in the parking lot is a great way to expose more people to the art and publicize the event in Heritage Court on Saturday, April 27. While the RBPAC parking lot will be closed, visitors to Springfest and the art exhibition can use the adjoining Northrop-Grumman parking lot Friday after 5 pm and all day on Saturday and Sunday.

Heritage Court / The Redondo Beach Historical Museum / The Morrell House

302 Flagler Lane

Saturday, April 27 - 10 am - 3 pm

Members of the Redondo Beach Historical Commission and the Redondo Beach Historical Society will join elected officials, staff from multiple City Departments, including Police, Fire, Community Services and Libraries to welcome residents and visitors to a fun-filled celebration of the City 132nd Birthday. Mayor Light will kick-off the festivities at 10 am followed by professional entertainers including President Lincoln on stilts and an interactive program of dances from around the world. The Museum will have activities for kids, and two “selfie” stations, and the Morrell House will be open for tours. Birthday cake and other light refreshments will be served. Souvenirs will include a “Redondo Beach Coloring Book,” “I Love Redondo Beach” bracelets and wild sunglasses!

And the icing on the metaphorical cake (because there will be real birthday cake with real icing) is -

The Historical Museum now has WIFI!!!!

Thank you, City of Redondo Beach Information Technology Department!

The Museum also has a telephone and a laptop computer that is connected to the internet. Happy Birthday, indeed!
