Parks and Recreation

The following items are provided as updates and general information regarding recreation and park-related items under the purview of the Public Amenities Commission (Commission):

 

Fall Classes & Activities

Registration for fall classes is ongoing.  Additional information can be found at the following link:

Upcoming Events & Activities

                     Storytime in the Park: Sunday, September 13 at Wilderness Park.

                     Pumpkins in the Park: Saturday, October 17 at Perry Park from 3:00 - 6:00pm

 

The following information is provided as updates following recent inquiries from the Commission regarding recreation and park-related projects and initiatives:

 

                     Franklin Park Playground Replacement

Demolition of the existing playground and surfacing began on Thursday, August 27.  Playground equipment has already begun being installed and is expected to continue through early October.  Staff anticipates the playground to be completed by mid-October.

 

Historical Museum

The following items are provided as updates and general information regarding historic-related items under the purview of the Public Amenities Commission.

 

Facility Operations and Attendance (August 2026)

The museum was open 11:00am to 2:00pm on the following days: 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 12, 15, 16, 19, 22, 23, 26, 29, and 30

 

The museum had a total monthly guest count of 274.

 

Exhibits & Displays

                     Dominguez Water Company Embosser - was recently donated, which is a c.1911 cast iron paper embosser with gold painted details and in good working condition.  Staff are working on the informative text and will have it out for display soon.

                     Scouting in Redondo Beach - old photos are displayed alongside early regalia that celebrates the history of Boy and Girl Scout troops in Redondo Beach.  Display contents were developed in consultation with a local troop leader and includes a period Boy Scout uniform; early Girl Scouts regalia including a sash, beret, and merit badges; and hand-carved pinewood derby racers from the 1970’s.

                     Olympic Games - An exhibit celebrating the upcoming 2028 Games is still on display, including memorabilia, advertisements, and other commemorative artifacts from the 1932 and 1984 Los Angeles Olympic games.  Items include those on loan from former Redondo Beach Olympian, Amy White, who was a 16-year-old silver medalist in swimming at the 1984 Olympics.

 

General Updates

                     Staff continue to organize and evaluate the condition of existing exhibits, display cases and other furnishings, and conditions of the museum facility.
