EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Redondo Beach Firefighter’s Association (RBFA) requests that the City donate an out of service Police Patrol Unit (Unit #658) to enable the RBFA to participate in an upcoming regional firefighter’s demolition derby charity event that raises funds for the Burn Institute.
BACKGROUND
The out of service vehicle requested for donation to charity is Unit #658, a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria, that is no longer required for Department operations. The vehicle is an extremely aged holdover unit assigned to the Police Department, has significant damage, and is currently being stored at the Public Works Department Yard awaiting auction. Given the age and the damage to the unit, it is difficult to estimate its auction value. The last comparable unit sent to auction was a 2012 Dodge Charger. The 2012 unit, which had significantly less damage, was sold at auction for $2,047.50. The vehicle, if approved for donation, would be used by the Redondo Beach Firefighter’s Association (RBFA) in the upcoming Firefighter Demolition Derby fundraising event.
The Firefighter Demolition Derby will be held on July 7, 2024. Funds raised at the event are used to support the Burn Institute. The Burn Institute provides vital fire and burn prevention public education, and facilitates a variety of burn survivor support programs including the Camp Beyond the Scars program for burn-injured children.
COORDINATION
Public Works Department coordinated with Fire Department and City Attorney’s Office.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no expenditure associated with the approval of this donation agreement. The City would, however, forgo any potential proceeds obtained through the sale of the donated vehicle at auction, which are estimated to be less than $2,000.
