BACKGROUND

At a recent Public Amenities Commission (“Commission”) meeting, Commissioner Maroko requested a discussion regarding a previously proposed Walk of History timeline signs project at Dominguez Park.  Included below is a history of the project, including input from the commission’s that previously considered it.

Former Historical Commission Consideration - September 21, 2022

On September 21, 2022, the former Historical Commission considered a recommendation from its Path of History Subcommittee to consider the installation of factual timeline signs throughout the walking paths at Dominguez Park that would highlight key moments in Redondo Beach history.  Included as Attachment 1 is the proposal prepared by the Path of History Subcommittee, including examples of historical events that could be included on the future signage.  The Historical Commission approved the subcommittee’s recommendation and requested for the former Recreation and Parks Commission to subsequently consider the project’s inclusion in the Dominguez Park Play Equipment, Landscape, and Walkway Capital Improvement Project (“CIP”).  Attachment 2 includes the minutes from the Historical Commission’s discussion.

Former Recreation and Parks Commission Consideration - May 10, 2023

The Recreation and Parks Commission considered the referral from the Historical Commission at its meeting on May 10, 2023.  The Historical Commission’s Path of History Subcommittee provided a supplemental concept image of the proposed signs for the Recreation and Parks consideration, which is included as Attachment 3.  Following its discussion, a majority of the Recreation and Parks Commissioners voted to refer the item back to the Historical Commission to provide additional project details; and one commissioner opposed the project all together, noting that the city had higher priority projects.  The following questions were referred back to the Historical Commission for further consideration:

How many signs does the Historical Commission want to install, keeping in mind that some believe the park already has a lot of signage?

Where exactly does the Historical Commission propose to install each sign?

What will the signs look like?

What will the project cost? Does the Historical Commission have the ability to raise the needed funds or will it be asking the City for money?

Included below are the minutes of this discussion from the Recreation and Parks May 10, 2023 meeting:

Former Historical Commission Reconsideration - February 14, 2024

On February 14, 2024, the former Historical Commission reconsidered the proposed Walk of History project, including the input and requested information from the Recreation and Parks Commission.  The Historical Commission did not take any action on the item and it has not been discussed since.  Included below are the minutes of that discussion:

Staff recommends the Public Amenities Commission consider whether it would like to resume discussions regarding this project to determine the preferred method for implementation.  Currently, there is no funding allocated for this project and the Dominguez Park CIP has already been completed.
