APPROVE A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH THE REDONDO BEACH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR THE USE OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CAMPUSES FOR THE CITY’S AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
end
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Community Services Department operates a daily After School Program for children ages 6-12 at all eight RBUSD elementary schools. Staff recommends the City Council approve a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Redondo Beach Unified School District (RBUSD) to allow the program to continue on school campuses through July 31, 2027 for a total annual cost to the City of $10,000. This amount is unchanged from the most recent agreement with RBUSD and is accounted for in the City’s FY 2026-27 adopted budget.
BACKGROUND
The Community Services Department operates an After School Program for children ages 6-12 years old. The program is held daily, during the school year on each of the eight RBUSD elementary school campuses. While the program focuses on recreational activities, time is also dedicated for the completion of homework. The upcoming 2026-27 school year has 565 current program registrants, with spaces still available at each location.
The proposed MOU with RBUSD (attached) would allow the after-school program to continue operation through July 31, 2027. The total cost to the City for use of the school sites is $10,000, which offsets the District’s maintenance and custodial impacts. This amount is consistent with previous agreements.
Staff recommends the City Council approve the proposed MOU with RBUSD to allow the City’s After School Program to continue on the District’s elementary school campuses. The Redondo Beach Board of Education is scheduled to review the proposed MOU at its regular meeting on August 11, 2026.
COORDINATION
The Community Services Department coordinated preparation of the MOU with the City Attorney’s Office, and the City’s Attorney Office approved the MOU as to form.
FISCAL IMPACT
The total cost for the proposed MOU is $10,000 and funding for the expense is included in the Community Services Department’s annual operating budget.
