EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The U.S. Department of Justice, through the Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), awarded the Redondo Beach Police Department a grant in the amount of $16,336 for the period October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2027.  Grant funds will be utilized to purchase Police Department equipment as authorized by OJP.

BACKGROUND

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program is the leading federal source of criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions.  The Redondo Beach Police Department has received annual JAG program grants since 1996.  The JAG allocation is based on Part I crime and population.  Redondo Beach has been approved for $16,336 for Federal Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25).  JAG distributes the funds on a reimbursement basis, with no requirement for matching funds from local jurisdictions.  The FY25 JAG Program grant period extends from October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2027.

The main purpose of the JAG Program is to provide flexible funding to jurisdictions to assist in the prevention and control of crime and to address critical local safety needs.  The grant funds can be used to purchase a variety of law enforcement equipment, supplies, and technology that fall within the priority areas identified by OJP.  In the past, the Police Department has utilized JAG funds towards its police officer recruitment efforts, drone as first responder program, ALPR program, and law enforcement equipment purchases.

COORDINATION

The Grant Award Package and Conditions, Certifications and Assurances Statement, and Resolution have been reviewed and approved as to form by the City Attorney’s Office.

FISCAL IMPACT

The JAG Program grant award is fully funded by the U.S. Department of Justice through OJP, and funds are distributed to the City on a reimbursement basis.  There is no requirement for City matching funds.
