DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING SUBCOMMITTEE FOR IDENTIFYING AN ARTIST AND PROPOSAL FOR A SCULPTURE TO BE INSTALLED AT GATEWAY PARKETTE

end

BACKGROUND

At the City Council meeting on August 4, 2026, staff received direction from Council to pursue a new project, not to exceed $275,000, to be installed at Gateway Parkette, to replace the previous “Gate Wave” sculpture project that became defunct when the artist Volkan Alkanoglu asked to be released from his Agreement. Council further directed staff to convey to the Cultural Arts Commission (CAC) that they should bypass the typical RFQ process, locating qualified artists and initiating an RFP process directly.  The Council also stipulated that potential artists must be clearly notified of existing underground utility obstacles at the site with any incumbent restrictions.

At the August 26, 2026 CAC meeting, a Subcommittee for Identification of an Artist and Proposal for a Sculpture to be Installed at Gateway Parkette was formed, consisting of Commissioners Melendez, Taner and Pitzele.  Commissioner Melendez will report on some ideas for accomplishing this task, with possible discussion.
