EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Redondo Beach Police Department plans to purchase two canines to replace recently retired canine Ammo and canine Brendon. The Redondo Beach Police Department has provided canine support to the community through Adlerhorst International, LLC since 1975 with patrol, narcotic and explosive canines. Police Department requests approving the sole source expenditure of $25,860 from the Redondo Beach Police Foundation donation account. The expenditure of $11,400 will be taken from Asset Forfeiture allowing for canine training.
BACKGROUND
In 1975, the Redondo Beach Police Department started a canine program with the overwhelming support of the community. The canines serve in the Patrol Division to conduct patrol service, narcotic and explosive detection. They also participate in numerous community events and perform countless demonstrations for schools, charitable organizations and city functions.
The recent retirement of canines Ammo and Brendon resulted in vacancies within the Canine Unit. Officers Daryn Glenn and Daniel Haley have been selected to become the Police Department's next canine handlers. The canines need to be selected and purchased for the team. Each canine team also needs to attend a six-week basic canine training school through Adlerhorst International, LLC.
Adlerhorst International, LLC is a sole source vendor of police canines in the area. They have provided the Redondo Beach Police Department with Dual Purpose Police Service Dogs and the only vendor who could provide the exact items needed for the Canine Unit. The department has used Adlerhorst International, LLC in the past years with success.
