EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
At the March 14, 2023 City Council meeting (minutes attached) council directed the Public Art Commission "to develop other permanent fixtures (like the MLK bench) that could be featured at City Hall, that espouses pride in the LGBTQ community."
At the March 27, 2024 Public Art Commission meeting, the Commission formed a committee to expedite the outreach and procurement efforts for a permanent art installation espousing pride in Redondo Beach's LGBTQ community. The committee met several times and gave several reports to the full commission. To date, the full commission has not taken any action.
Now that the Public Art Commission has been reformed as the Cultural Arts Commission, this item gives the Cultural Arts Commission an opportunity to create its own committee to accomplish council's request.
BACKGROUND
At the January 3, 2023 City Council meeting, a referral was made to staff to prepare an item to discuss the possible adoption of a resolution declaring June as Pride Month. The resolution was then drafted, discussed and adopted at the March 14, 2023 City Council meeting. As part of the discussion, the City Council directed that a Pride flag be raised at the City's Civic Center during the month of June.
At the March 14, 2023 City Council meeting, the Council adopted Resolution No. CC-2303-027 recognizing June as "Pride Month" in the City of Redondo Beach.
