DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING SUBCOMMITTEES AND SUBCOMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS, BOTH ACTIVE AND DORMANT
end
BACKGROUND
The Cultural Arts Commission (CAC) currently has a number of subcommittees on a variety of topics and projects, including:
• Gateway Parkette Sculpture - $275,000 allocated from John Parsons Public Art Fund (JPPAF)
• Shorewall/Splash Wall Art Tile - $50,000 allocated from JPPAF
• Esplanade Public Art - $100,000 allocated from JPPAF, $84,500 not yet determined
• LGBTQIA+ Sculpture - Project re-directed to ARTesia Public Art Project with $25,000 allocation from JPPAF, under guidance by LeBasse Projects, artist to be selected by Community Panel and CAC
• Transit Center Art - $74,000 allocated originally from Prop. C Local Return Funds, funding currently in doubt
• Revival of annual Chalk Art Festival - No allocation as of yet
• Public Art in Lilienthal Park - No allocation as of yet
Subcommittees are intended to be “ad hoc” (for a specific purpose) and should expire with either completion or a specific date. A number of these subcommittees date back as far as the former Public Art Commission (LTBTQIA+ Sculpture and Lilienthal Park). One has lost its original funding (Transit Center). Another became dormant following the removal of one of the two commissioners for absences (Chalk Art Festival).
Staff recommends that CAC discuss which subcommittees can be dissolved and reconstituted at a future date. Staff also recommends that subcommittee assignments be reconsidered for either ongoing confirmation or by increasing/decreasing participation to further advance their goals.
