EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
On May 7, 2024, the City Council directed staff to move forward with changes to the City's existing Boards and Commissions that would eliminate certain boards, consolidate and adjust the purview of select commissions, and create a means to cancel upcoming commission meetings for a lack of business.
The Ordinance being presented for second reading and adoption would amend the Redondo Beach Municipal Code (RBMC) to change the name of the Public Art Commission to the Cultural Arts Commission and add the ability for the Commission to make recommendations to the Council related to performing arts events and programs, including, but not limited to, theater, music, film, fine art, literature, and poetry.
BACKGROUND
Currently, the Public Art Commission serves as an advisory body to the City Council with duties that include advising on artworks that are identified through a gift, City purchase, or artist commission, that are displayed in any publicly owned property or right-of-way area including parks, City buildings and facilities, streets, medians, sidewalks, plazas, and in any other public location determined by the City Council. The Public Art Commission also stimulates community interest in public art, makes recommendations for public art guidelines and the acquisition of public art, as well as advises Council on the prioritization of proposed public art projects.
