RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Public Amenities Commission:
1. Open public hearing and administer oath;
2. Take testimony from staff, applicant, and interested parties;
3. Close public hearing and deliberate; and
4. Adopt a resolution by title only approving the request subject to the findings and
conditions contained therein:

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The City of Redondo Beach City Council is requesting the Public Amenities Commission consider a landmark designation for the Francis Hopkins Wilderness Park based on its association with important periods in the City’s history and pre-history. The approximately 11-acre property occupies a prominent location atop what was a prominent coastal sand dune, where the Chowigna used the elevated site as a lookout. The property later served as the control/radar site for the LA-57 Nike missile installation, connecting Redondo Beach to the Cold War-era defense system established to protect the Los Angeles region between 1954 to 1973. Following the military use, the property was sold for one dollar to the City for public recreational purposes and developed as Wilderness Park, which opened in 1977.
