EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On September 3, 2019, the City Council approved an agreement with Specialized Elevator Services, LLC for the purchase of materials and labor for the Main Library Rehabilitation Project, Job No. 20780 for the amount of $173,784. The project is now complete and ready for City Council acceptance.

BACKGROUND

The elevator that serves the five levels of the Main Library and the Civic Center parking structure needed rehabilitation. The structure is almost 25 years old and experienced extremely heavy use by visitors to the Library and Civic Center as well as City employees. The elevator showed signs of wear in multiple areas and has had a number of breakdowns in recent years.

In 2015, the City performed repairs under a two-phased project approach.   Phase I of the elevator renovation project included removal and replacement of the plunger assembly, removal and replacement of the jack casing, removal of portions of the concrete pit floor, replacement of hydraulic oil, and installation of a new above-ground feed line in an effort to alleviate operational problems.

On September 3, 2019, the City Council approved an agreement with Specialized Elevator Services, LLC for the purchase of materials and labor for the Main Library Rehabilitation Project, Job No. 20780 in the amount of $173,784.  This second phase replaced outdated components such as the microprocessor controller, electrical switches, motor, pumps, and valves, and installed updated hoistway, pit, and door equipment and interior fixtures to modernize the elevator and alleviate recent concerns with its operation.  An additional purchase order will be issued to an as yet undetermined contractor to repair floor tiles in the elevator’s cab.

The contracted work for Specialized Elevator Services LLC is now complete and ready for City Council acceptance.  The elevator is currently in service and awaits finishing touches to repair the broken floor tiling.  Arrangements for this work are underway.

COORDINATION

This project has been fully coordinated with the Public Works and Library Services Departments.
