ADOPT BY TITLE ONLY RESOLUTION NO. CC-2008-056, A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA AMENDING THE OFFICIAL BOOK OF CLASSIFICATIONS BY MODIFYING THE CLASS SPECIFICATION FOR THE FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC POSITION
end
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The City maintains an Official Book of Class Specifications for positions in the service of the City of Redondo Beach. As recruitments for open positions are initiated, class titles and specifications are updated to validate job duties, responsibilities and qualifications, and to reflect industry standard in verb tense. This action is recommended pursuant to Section 2-3.502 of Article 5 and Section 2-3.603 of Article 6, Chapter 3, Title 2 of the Redondo Beach Municipal Code, which authorizes the Mayor and City Council to set forth from time to time, the class titles and specifications for job classifications.
BACKGROUND
It is necessary to revise the prerequisites for hire prior to recruitment for filling vacancies in the Class Specification of Firefighter/Paramedic. Staff requests the classification specifications for this position be updated to reflect current duties, expectations, and requirements.
The revised Class Specification includes an update to the position requirements. This substantive change requires that the applicant must hold a current California paramedic license, or be registered as a paramedic with the National Registry. The previous Class Specification did not specify a paramedic license from the State of California, and made the registration with the National Registry a requirement. This change is necessary because graduates of California paramedic training programs always maintain their California State license, but generally do not maintain registration with the National Registry because it is not a California State requirement.
The remaining changes are formatting changes in verb tense to bring the document into compliance with current industry standard to use the present tense in verb sentence structure, and to make descriptions of duties more comprehensive.
COORDINATION
The Fire Department and Human Resources Department coordinated updates to the Class Specifications with the input and approval of the Redondo Beach Firefighters Association. The City Attorney’s Office reviewed the resolution and class specification and approved it as to form.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no fiscal impact. The positions are funded in the Fire Department FY 20-21 adopted annual budget.
