BACKGROUND
In 2021, the Historical Commission requested the Public Art Commission consider the installation of a historical mural or art installation at the Ito Family Open Space, located on the corner of Ripley Avenue and Flagler Lane. This installation would focus on art and history, specifically in celebration of the park's namesake, the Ito family. The Public Art Commission assigned this task to the Mural Subcommittee and then later to the Historical Commission Liaison group, who developed a preliminary conceptual plan that included select plants, trees, monument pieces, signage and fencing. Examples of these items are included as attachment 3.

This conceptual plan was provided as an update at the Public Art Commission's June 1, 2022 meeting. A formal review and discussion of the conceptual plan was provided to the Public Art Commission at its July 27 meeting. Overwhelmingly, the Public Art Commission was in support of the concepts and overall design of the park and thanked the liaison group for its work thus far.

The City's arborist has reviewed the plant and tree list and provided input, which is reflected in the conceptual plan, included as Attachment 1. Attachment 2 includes an additionally drafted conceptual plan that notes the approximate locations of the proposed pathways throughout the park. The Commission's input will be provided to the Recreation and Parks Commission who will provide general input on the entirety of the proposal.
